The importance of having fun

Do you have fun when you're working out? Do you enjoy the time you spend trying to make yourself healthier? With so many different variations of programs, styles, equipment, sports why are you working out in a way that's not fun? Better yet, don't you think... if you WERE having fun, you'd improve faster?

The Cookie Cutter

You meet with your trainer, they tell you how many minutes of cardio a week you'll have for homework, how many sessions a week for weight training and they may even discuss auctioning time for stretching and recovering. And this is the magic formula to get the results I'm looking for? Yes but also, it's one of many.

Let's dive deeper into what the trainer actually said, and didn't say out loud

Currently 60 minutes of vigorous exercise at minimum a week in conjunction with 150 minutes of low intensity cardiovascular exercise is the current standard by the American heart association for activity in adults. (this number has and will change over time, the big thing to take away is moving more often is generally better). The more movement in your routine the more time that should be spent "recovering" which is stretching, foam rolling, massage, temperature therapies ect. Everything the trainer stated above covers those minimums; it's their personal preference on how they go about it and if they want to do more than the minimum.

How do I have fun then?

Associate things that make you breathe heavy where you need to take interval breaks as vigorous exercise (Soccer, rock climbing, weight training, basketball); and low intensity as things that don't require a break (Jogging, walking, cycling, eliptical). From there with the numbers above you can start to create your own "fun" programming. It's important to discuss your program with a health professional/doctor as they may be able to gauge certain needs you are unaware or specific to your medical needs.
